Rachel Ott: 24 years at the crossroads of education

By Richard Burger
Rachel Ott has had a unique perspective of the Grandview School District, and of education in general, during her 24-year career there.
She will retire Feb. 29, a day that only comes every four years.
"I'm leaping into retirement," said Ott.
As secretary to the superintendent, she has worked with three of those district chief executives.
In that position, she deals on a daily basis with the interactions between the superintendent and the district staff, the certified staff, the school board, and the parents and the community at large.
Meet Grandview's wheel-chair ramp guru

By Richard Burger
Everyone knows about Grandview Police Chief Dave Charvet's expertise in law enforcement.
But they may not know about his skill with a Skil saw, drill, and tape measure.
Charvet has been involved in the Volunteer Chore Services program of the Catholic Family and Child Services since 2008.
His specialty is wheelchair ramps, and he is the singular provider of that service in the lower Yakima Valley.
"I am the ramp guy," said Charvet.

The hospital board has approved a plan to merge Grandview Medical Center and Birch Street Medical Center.
The news was shared with staff earlier last week, according to the Sunnyside Community Hospital newsletter.
The exact makeup of the merged clinic will be worked out in the next week or two.
Birch Street will be closing sometime in early February.
Could be the end of an era for GID

By Richard Burger
Grandview Irrigation District may be absorbed by the Sunnyside Valley Irrigation District in the near future, if the growers served by GID don't object.
GID board president Ben Fisher said last week a public hearing will be held Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 1:30 p.m., at the SVID office in Sunnyside.
The hearing will be held to consider the merger of the two districts. The merger will move forward unless 20 percent of the growers served by SVID object.
The merger must also be approved by a majority of those served by GID.
